History of Saheliyon Ki Bari
Saheliyon ki Bari was constructed in the 18th century in between 1710 and 1734 especially for the Princess and her 48 maids who accompanied her after her marriage with Maharana Sangram Singh so that they could also steal some pleasurable moments during their service to the Queen. The idea was to create a green retreat in the otherwise hot and dry state of Rajasthan.
The King himself designed the Saheliyon ki Bari and gifted this monument to his beautiful Queen. The king knew the Queen loved the sound of the rain. The design and the location of the garden was hence a thoughtful choice. It was created on the banks of the Fateh Sagar Lake which served as a continuous source of water from where it was drawn to the fountains and the lotus pond. The Queen and her royal maids often spent memorable moments here at the Saheliyon ki Bari.
Architecture Design of Saheliyon ki Bari Udaipur:
The beautiful garden has been designed to inculcate all the aspects of nature that the Queen loved. It is said that she liked the sound of the rain and hence the king incorporated many fountains to replicate the sound. The entrance itself has two splendid fountains on either side of the gate and this welcoming the tourists into the majestic world of the royalties. The whole garden is lined with fountains too, which gives a feeling that it’s raining in every corner of the beautiful Bari.
The decorated garden has tall trees, shrubs and flower beds which add more color and fragrance to the mesmerizing monument. There is also a pond which is called the lotus pond which has four fountains with water being projected from the trunks of the elephant structures made of marble. Each elephant is directed inwards so that they project water at the center of the beautiful lotus pond. Several water jets also line the circumference of the pond. The fountains do not have any electrical motor to supply water. They work as per the original old days engineering and still draw water from the Fateh Sagar Lake.
